MUST BE THIS GAY TO RIDE (2023)

Theatre show written and performed by Kate Hammer. Performed in Glasgow and London with the Camden Fringe.

A one-woman show about feeling queer enough at the best and worst of times (mostly the worst times).

INFEMOUS is a production collective founded by Kate Hammer that creates inclusive writing, comedy, theatre, and videos.

We believe that humour is one of the most powerful forms of engagement, and when you mix it with a little vulnerability and a cup of truth, well, then you’ve got magic.

Welcome to the curvy world of INFEMOUS: THE SHOW! A place where women and non-binary folk take the stage for themselves.

INFEMOUS is a well-rounded comedy hour of vivacious proportions. In one sitting, audience members are treated to solo, sketch, and improv comedy, led by a local guest monologist. INFEMOUS is creating a space for women and non-binary creators in the community because, as it turns out, that still needs to happen.

The show that started out with the simple goal of making space has turned into a place to process and find solidarity in storytelling about the experiences that make us feel different. And then we laugh about it, and sometimes, we even “aww.”

In 2018, INFEMOUS was invited to be a part of the OFF-JFL festival as part of Just for Laughs, and on the MainStage of POP Montreal. We were so proud to bring this show to an international stage with a full house (we’re sell-outs, baby!)

INFEMOUS has been proud to host talented performers such as Tranna Wintour, Jess Salomon, Eman El Husseini, Ayan Abdirahman, Nancy Webb, Tatyana Olal, Sara Meleika, Kelly Hurcomb, Laura Buchanan, Marty Graham, Rena Taylor, Nicky Fournier, and many more!

THE PEERS

The Peers-Group-1.jpg

INFEMOUS presents THE PEERS: A Shakespeare Parody-Mash-Up-Comedy…You’re Welcome.

The Peers is a modern take on our canon, the arts we pass on, and bringing feminism into old tales to liven them up a little. Written by Kate Hammer, and performed by Lisa Drupsteen, Rahul Gandhi, Conor Tomalty, Adrian Macdonald, and Kate Hammer, this show has a spark and energy that cannot be missed.

WE HAVE BEEN NOMINATED FOR THREE MONTREAL FRINGE AWARDS: The Just for Laughs: Best English Comedy, Segal Centre: Most Promising Local Theatre Company, and Freestanding Room: Making Big Things Happen in Small Places. Peep the official list here.

Catch our feminist masterpiece at the Toronto Fringe July 3-13th!

Some persuasive media quotes:

Montreal Fringe Festival 2019

Rating: 5-stars

CULTMTL: Kate Hammer, comedy scenester   –  Nora Rosenthal

“I’ve tried to rein myself in over the years, not to make others uncomfortable, not to be too much, and writing this show is the first time in a long time that I feel like I’ve been allowed to be big and to be myself.” – Kate Hammer, playwright; “The Peers”

Montreal Theatre Hub: Fringe Review: Love of the stage in INFEMOUS’ “The Peers”   – Molly Barrieau

"With such high energy and intensity, moments could only be enjoyed for a few seconds before another gut-busting one-liner was delivered, or a song was belted, or a costume was altered."

Montreal Gazette: Montreal Fringe festival dances along the edge   –  Jim Burke

“If you’re looking for your Shakespeare fix this year, Kate Hammer and her feminist improv troupe INFEMOUS provide a quick-fire mash-up of the comedies.”

CJLO: The Peers -Erica Bridgeman

“Collectively, their chemistry together was palpable and their energy was contagious. Their utter disregard for the fourth wall was hysterical, the execution of which was remarkably relatable. Along with phenomenal continuity, brilliant comedy and wonderfully creative storytelling, this is a show you would regret missing for the rest of your life. You might even say that the stakes have never been higher to see a work of Shakespeare.”

Mooney on Theatre: The Peers

“The actors perform in high energy for the entire piece, creating bold, daring choices that keeps audience members on their toes. The usage of extreme physicality, over expression, puppetry, props, and audience interaction are both stimulating and captivating…I am a huge advocate for adults to maintain an element of exploration and play, and play is alive and well with this cast. The company will keep you entertained and laughing throughout. The Peers is a hilarious piece that is sure to attract all Shakespeare enthusiasts.”

One Big Umbrella: The Peers

“The setup is 5 aspiring actors of various types have been abandoned by the rest of the production and are contractually obligated to perform all of Shakespeare's plays in an hour. What ensures is a lot of mayhem and misunderstandings that is really clever and funny. The plays that are focused on are gender-swapped and deconstructed but you don't need to know that to enjoy the set pieces…It’s a play worth seeing.”
